Process servers are not allowed to enter a residence, but they may leave a summons tacked to your door if it does not show the contents. However, a process will most often return if you are not at home or wait for you to leave before catching you as you walk away. If you avoid being served, the process server may wait until you are compelled to leave or enter the site where they are staying. This is also called a stake out.
A process server who is having difficulty finding the person being served may stake out his or her house. This means they will watch and wait for the person to come outside so they can serve them. However, they cannot enter the property or block the driveway.
